Ilisah is the craft house of Lisa Mutua — a third-generation Kamba embroiderer working from a workshop just outside Nairobi. Every cushion cover, table mat, pouch and bag in the Ilisah collection is hand-stitched, one piece at a time, by Lisa and her team of eight women.
The motifs are drawn from Kenya's bird country — hummingbirds, bee-eaters, flamingos — rendered in saturated cottons against handwoven linen. Pieces take days, sometimes weeks. None are repeated exactly.
Lisa joined AYA in early 2021. She ships from Nairobi to thirty-four countries and is part of the EU export pilot via our Berlin fulfilment partnership.
